I would say it's excellent for a beginner. I have read other reviews that say it's not good for fast action/sports, and that focus on zoom takes a few seconds and are blurry photos at times, but if you brace camera on a tripod or fence, etc, and wait for focus, you should do well with far away mountains or anything distant. I learned with a manual 35 mm camera, and this is definitely better, it takes a lot of thought out of setting up a shot while still getting good results. I definitely think you would enjoy using it.
